Meet your driver in Tangier and head south into the Rif Mountains. Your first stop is the famous blue city of Chefchaouen. Spend the afternoon walking the quiet, painted streets and taking photos of the mountain views.
Stop at Cap Spartel and Hercules Caves
Scenic drive through the Rif Mountains
Free time in the blue-washed medina
Overnight in a local Chefchaouen riad
Take your morning coffee in the mountain air before driving to the imperial city of Fes. The drive takes you through rolling hills and farming towns. Arrive by the afternoon to settle into your riad near the old medina walls.
Spend the day with a local guide seeing the sights of Fes. Walk through the narrow lanes of the medina, visit the Chouara tanneries to see how leather is dyed, and step inside the old Islamic schools. The rest of the evening is yours to explore or relax.
Leave the city behind and drive into the Middle Atlas mountains. Pass through Ifrane, often called the “Switzerland of Morocco,” and stop in the cedar forests of Azrou to feed the wild Barbary macaque monkeys. Sleep in the small town of Midelt.
Cross the Ziz Valley, watching the landscape turn dry and rocky as you get closer to the Sahara. Arrive in Merzouga in time to swap your 4×4 for a camel. Ride into the Erg Chebbi dunes to watch the sunset before eating dinner and sleeping at a Berber desert camp.
Wake up early to watch the sunrise over the sand dunes. After breakfast, take a 4×4 tour around the area. You will visit Khamlia to hear Gnawa music, see fossil quarries, and share tea with a nomad family in their tent.
Drive out of the desert and stop at the Todra Gorge, where tall rock walls cut through the river. After a walk through the canyon, continue down the “Road of a Thousand Kasbahs” to your hotel in the Dades Valley.
On your last day, drive through the Ounila Valley to visit Ait Benhaddou, a famous old fort used as a backdrop in many movies. Finish the trip by crossing the High Atlas mountains via the Tizi n’Tichka pass, ending at your hotel in Marrakech.

Yes. Most travelers on this route arrive by ferry from Spain. Your driver will meet you right outside the ferry terminal in Tangier, help with your bags, and start the drive to Chefchaouen.
It takes about seven hours of driving, but we break it up. Stopping in Ifrane to see the monkeys and having lunch in Midelt makes the drive much easier. The scenery changes so much that the time passes quickly.
Both camps are in the Erg Chebbi dunes, but the luxury camp offers private tents with real beds, attached bathrooms, and better soundproofing. The standard camp has shared bathrooms and traditional sleeping mats on the floor.
Driving from the desert back to Tangier takes over 10 hours and means skipping the Atlas mountains. Ending in Marrakech is the most natural, scenic route. If you need to get back to Tangier, we can book a fast train or a domestic flight for you.
